What Are You Reading?

Black and white2I was talking with Katandra Shanel Jackson today. She is the CEO of the publishing company here in Georgia called FreedomInk365. We were discussing how many people just don’t read anymore.

When was the last time you sat down with a good book and got lost in a fantastic tale? Fiction or non-fiction, there are books about anything you might like.

I talk to so many people who when asked, say they just don’t read. They’d rather watch a movie or the TV.

In this electronics age, I fear we are stealing imagination away from our children and grandchildren. When we were kids, we played  “pretend” everything. We had sticks and branches as swords, braided dandelions for crowns. And yes, my friend and I once caught a bunch of grasshoppers and tied them up with string so we could put our horses in a corral.

Boy was my mom mad. Untying them was quite a feat, too.

But without imagination,  whence come dreams? And without dreams what can we hope to accomplish? And without that hope, where will we go, what things will we create for our future?

When everything is done for you, on TV, in the movies, or on your tablet, there is nothing left for you to create in your mind. Ho imagination required. Just fetch the popcorn.

A good book, on the other hand, provides you the opportunity to create the scenes in it, to picture the countryside of renaissance England, or the quaint little street in the French Quarter of New Orleans the suspect just turned onto.

What about that wedding dress the sweetheart of our hero is wearing? Can you picture the lace with the pearl buttons? And our swashbuckling hero. How does he cope with a tuxedo and dress shoes?

So, what have you been reading? And if you’ve not been reading, it’s time to give it a try. It doesn’t matter what it is. What are your hobbies, your fantasies, your dreams?

There’s a book about that, I guarantee it.

Go on. What are you waiting for!

Gratitude…

Black and white2So, tell me, what made you smile today? What made you happy? What are you thankful for?

These days it seems the news is always bad. Every time you turn on the TV or radio, or look at new on the web, it’s bad news. It’s full of murder and mayhem, wars, conflicts, storms and tragedies.

But there must be some good news out there. Right? Every now and again a small story will pop up about someone who helped out in a special way, or about a friends or family reunited after years apart.

We hear from the law of attraction people that where our mind is,  our reality is created. What if by concentrating on everything that’s wrong with the world, we’re merely perpetuating the cycle.

What if we could change it?

Can we simply say no to the big broadcasting companies and seek out those things that are right with our world? What if by focusing on the good, we could cancel out part of what’s wrong? Even just a little bit.

We could make a start.

What if we ask ourselves, “What else is possible?” and let the universe answer that question for us?

Let’s go out today and look for something that makes us smile or laugh, or even just be happy to have seen today. It doesn’t matter how small it is, as long as it makes you happy.

I found a pretty little stone this morning. It’s cream in color, fairly thin, and almost perfectly round. I think it will make a lovely necklace.

So, what puts a smile on your face?

Ciao!

We’re Melting!

Black and white2Our snow is beginning to melt once again, leaving our driveway and the road we live on a muddy, rutted mess. But since both are gravel, it’s to be expected.

OK, for those of you who live up north, a few inches of snow is not a problem. And I don’t understand why it was such a problem here. Granted, we don’t get a lot of snow here, but it isn’t unusual to have some snow during January and February.

We had plenty of warning that the storm was headed our way. The state and local governments have equipment which could have been deployed before it reached us, or at the very least, in the earlier stages of it.

Today I went into Gainesville, GA with our daughter. She’s a home health nurse and needed to see a patient who’d been postponed until today due to the weather.  Our little back roads, of course, were untouched. But we had expected the interstate to be plowed.

No. It didn’t look like anything had been done. Though it was beginning to melt, it was treacherous. There was no evidence of a plow having been down the road. Big patches of ice and slush remained on the highway. We were afraid of what we would find once we exited the interstate.

I have to say that Hall County Georgia did a good job on their roads. All the roads we had to travel to reach the patient had been plowed and sanded. No big chunks of ice or snow in the middle of the roads. The parking lot at the hospital needed some work, but that isn’t the county’s responsibility.

Thank you Hall County. And for those responsible for I-85 between South Carolina and Gainesville, GA, take a lesson from these folks. They’ve got it going.

Stay safe everyone.

New Year’s Resolutions?

Black and white2Why do we make New Year’s Resolutions? And once we’ve made them, how do we keep them?

Now that the New Year is upon us, most of us have probably made our resolutions. The hard part comes later when life interferes with our resolutions.

Want more information about why we resolve year after year to do something we probably will not do?

Need some tips on keeping those resolutions?

Remembering Jester…

Me and Jester2Another old friend has passed over today–our 9 year old shepherd mix dog, Jester. It was kind of a shock. He hadn’t been ill, played with his friend, Mari just a day or two ago, and was cheerful and happy yesterday.

But this morning when I went out to feed him, I found him stretched out under his favorite tree, looking so much like he was asleep. It was hard to believe that he was gone.

Run free, big guy. Have fun wherever you are. We miss you already.

Be Safe

Black and white2OK, everybody. This is the last weekend before Christmas and the traffic is crazy, in the stores as well as on the street.

Above all, be safe out there.

Please practice shopping and driving safety and give yourself a little extra time to get things done. I don’t know what the weather is like where you are, but here in Georgia we’re getting ready for more rain. And that makes the streets and freeways an absolute nightmare.

Keep your eyes open, your purses and wallets out of sight, and stay alert. We want to see you around for a while longer.

For more information on shopping safety, you can read my article on the Yahoo Contributor Network.

Have a safe and happy holiday. I’ll talk to you later!

Ciao!

‘Tis the Season

Black and white2Indeed it is. But what season is it? Christmas time is supposed to be all about peace, charity, and love. Right? But what happens on the first official shopping day for Christmas? Violence against other shoppers and law enforcement over simple things.

How much is that toy really worth? Or how about the new  phone or tablet you want to get for a family member? Is it really worth someone’s life or a trip to jail?

Great way for your family to celebrate isn’t it.

Let’s remember that Christmas is supposed to be a Christian holiday. No, I’m not even going to get into the theological arguments about it. But if it is a Christian tradition, shouldn’t those keeping it show decent Christian ethics, like loving your neighbor?

Yes, ’tis the season. Help make it a happy, healthy, and safe one for everyone. Spread a little love and friendship around to those you meet.

Have a happy holiday everybody!

Thanksgiving Is Here

Black and white2Just a note to wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving. Have fun, spend time with your families, and reflect on all those things you are thankful for this year.

It seems like the world is in a hurry to get to Christmas as soon as Halloween is over. Let’s not forget to take time for gratitude.

Happy holidays to you all!
